FAQ
Who is Deafferent Theatre?
We are Jess and Ilana, two theatre-lovers who wanted to make/share theatre. Surrounding us are an amazing community of Deaf and non-Deaf performers, creatives, Auslan users, and advocates who come together for art’s sake.
Can you share my show on your Facebook page? It’s Auslan interpreted!
We receive so many requests to share shows that are Auslan interpreted. Our policy is that unless we have direct involvement in the project, we will not share Auslan interpreted events on our social media accounts.
Can you interpret/find an interpreter for my show?
No, we can’t. We are not an interpreting agency; we are a theatre company.
Can you find me a deaf creative?
We love that deaf creatives are in demand, but we are not an agency for deaf creatives (but there’s an idea!) If you’d like to work with deaf folk, consider sharing your projects/casting calls with organisations like Arts Access Victoria and Expression Australia. If you are a non-deaf artist looking to work with deaf artists, we strongly urge you to do Deaf Awareness Training, and have a deaf dramaturg involved. Auslan interpreters may also be required.

Everyone should learn Auslan. Why don’t they just teach it in all schools?
We agree. If you think everyone should know Auslan, be the example and invite a group of mates, and go to some Auslan classes. No one has ever regretted learning Auslan.
I want to learn Auslan. Where can I do this?
Yay!! There are several different Auslan classes out there. If you’re just starting out, you can contact Expressions Australia, who have classes all over Victoria, as well as online. Or there's Magic Hands and Open That Door, both are community-based classes in a more informal setting. If you are based in other Australian states/territories, you can contact your nearest Deaf society.
You didn't answer my question/I still want to contact you.
We'd love for you to get in touch. Click on the button below.
